Binley & Wadwick

Connected by a couple of footpaths and a small road are the two hamlets of Binley and Wadwick. We could not find a church in Binley

Binley is the only one of the two hamlets that has a public house, The Hurdlemaker's Arms which seems to show what type of industry was in the area as there are loads of hazel clumps that supply the wood for making hurdles.

There were once two farms her Upper and Lower Wadwick, the gate pillars for Upper Wadwick Farm are described as 'Rusticated square stone piers surmounted by ball ornaments, flanking the drive entrance'. and are from either the 18th or 19th century.  The farm buildings are picturesque weather boarded and thatched.

Binley has a telephone box near to the inn but both Wadwick and Binley have their own post boxes. There is a weekly bus service into Newbury.

It also is supposed to have its own ghost as if you are travelling in the direction of Stoke Farm there is a small piece of land that was once a smallholding belonging to a man who built a house there and as he was not that good a carpenter he installed a ladder instead of a staircase to the upper rooms. The house caught fire one night and was destroyed taking the owner with it and they way that he still appears in any bonfire smoke there!
