| Canford is a parish on the River Stour
and it is about 2 miles to the east of Wimborne. The ancient church
which is in the village of Canford is of both Saxon and Norman in origin
and can be seen in the 260 acre parkland of Canford Manor which was once
a nunnery and the seat of the lord of the manor, Lord Wimborne who had a
coach road with two bridges to enable him to drive direct to Bournemouth
railway station.. Later it became one of the youngest public schools in
England. It was originally set around a much older building which had
been the home of the Montague's, Beauforts and Mountjoys of Salisbury,
and it has a lot of history surrounding it and among its visitors was
the Black Prince and William Longespee a famous knight, who in 1248,
granted the charter to Poole . The
village used to have chapels for both Congregationalists and Wesleyans
and the village school was built in 1866 and has now been changed to the
village hall. |
