Poyntington

Poyntington can be found in the north of the county at Seven Wells Down where the River Yeo rises. Tudor House was the seat of the Malets  and William Malet was ordered by William the Conqueror to make sure that a fitting funeral was arranged for King Harold who he had beaten at Hastings, Sir Thomas Malet was born here in 1582 and he was Judge Defender to the cause of Charles I, and Baldwin Malet was killed near the village while fighting for the king, Sir Edward Malet was the Deputy Commandant of the Royal Armoured Corps.

Another well known family who had a home here are the Cheney's, but their home has been converted to a farmhouse and it was here that notorious Judge Jeffrey's held one of his famous courts following Monmouth's rebellion.  Judge Jeffreys was known as the hanging judge and was probably the most feared judge in the whole of England's history.
