| Overlooking the River Medina and
between Cowes and Newport is Northwood, the old village was in
Chawton Lane near to the 12th century church of St John the
Baptist. There are three well
known inns here, The Flowerpot, now a private residence on Newport
Road, The Horseshoe once known as the Half-way House, and The
Travellers Joy, once a thatched ale house has survived.
During the 19th century there was
an increase i the population due to the gravel pits at Furzyhurst
and the brickyards at Hillis, Werrar and down at the bottom of
Oxford streets being made bigger.
Next to the Horseshoe stood a
wheelwright and forge and there was a second forge in the village
as well.
The church stands among trees on a
hill that affords a lovely view over the downs andit has a
painting that depicts the Baptism which is said to have been
painted by Bassario who was a painter during the 1500s.
